Trilingual Construction Terminology Glossary
Short explanations of technical terms used across our waterproofing, thermal insulation, building reinforcement, and turnkey construction pages, with TR/HR/EN equivalents.
Insulation Materials
- EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) — TR: EPS, HR: EPS: The most economical thermal insulation board option.
- XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) — TR: XPS, HR: XPS: High compressive-strength thermal insulation board with low water absorption.
- PIR/PUR Foam — TR: PIR/PUR köpük, HR: PIR/PUR pjena: Insulation material with the lowest thermal conductivity coefficient.
- Glass Wool — TR: Cam yünü, HR: Staklena vuna: Non-combustible (Class A1) mineral insulation that also provides sound insulation.
- Stone Wool — TR: Taş yünü, HR: Kamena vuna: Mineral insulation resistant to temperatures above 650°C.
- Bituminous Membrane — TR: Bitümlü membran, HR: Bitumenska membrana: The most commonly used waterproofing material; applied by torching or self-adhesion.
- PVC/TPO Membrane — TR: PVC/TPO membran, HR: PVC/TPO membrana: Synthetic waterproofing membrane with high flexibility and UV resistance.
- Bentonite Clay — TR: Bentonit kil, HR: Bentonitna glina: Natural material that swells on contact with water to form a watertight layer.
Reinforcement Terms
- Carbon Fiber (CFRP) — TR: Karbonfiber, HR: Karbonska vlakna: Structural reinforcement with carbon-fiber composite; several times steel's tensile strength per unit weight and 4-5 times lighter.
- Concrete Jacketing — TR: Mantolama, HR: Betonska obloga: Strengthening a column by wrapping it in concrete or steel.
- Jet Grouting — TR: Jet grouting, HR: Jet grouting: Foundation reinforcement method using soil injection.
- Micropiles — TR: Mikrokazık, HR: Mikropiloti: Foundation reinforcement using small-diameter piles.
Standards & Regulations

- TBDY 2018 (Türkiye): Turkish Building Earthquake Code; the basis for seismic performance assessment.
- Law No. 6306 (Türkiye): Turkey's law on the transformation of areas under disaster risk; the legal basis for risky-building detection and urban transformation.
- Eurocode 8 (EU): European standard for earthquake-resistant design.
- Zakon o gradnji (Croatia): Croatia's Building Act.
- nZEB (EU): Nearly-zero-energy building standard; an energy requirement for new buildings.
Construction & Turnkey Terms
- Turnkey — TR: Anahtar teslim, HR: Ključ u ruke: Managing the entire process, from design to handover, under a single contract and a single responsible contractor.
- FF&E — TR: FF&E, HR: FF&E oprema: Furniture, fixtures & equipment; coordinated in parallel with the construction program in hotel and commercial projects.
- Shell & Core — TR: Shell & core, HR: Shell & core: A building's base structure and main systems, separate from tenant fit-out.
- Fit-out — TR: Fit-out, HR: Fit-out: Interior work customized for the tenant.
